An arterial septal defect is an abnormal hole in the wall between upper chambers of the heart that lets blood to flow from the left side of the heart to the right in an irregular manner. This forces the right side of the heart and lungs to overexert to compensate for lacking left side. ASDs are congenitally occurring defects that are tricky to treat in very small children. If ASDs are not treated or rectified in time, the heart can enlarge or weaken, leaving the sufferer open to serious heart diseases like arterial fibrillation, pulmonary hypertension, heart failure or stroke.
