A blood pressure unit works by measuring the flow of blood in the arteries. An inflatable arm-cuff that is placed around the right hand is inflated using an attached rubber bulb. The blood flow through the artery is restricted; the attending physician listens to the brachial artery at the elbow and slowly releases the pressure on the cuff. The pressure at which the blood starts flowing again is the systolic blood pressure.
