SmartWalk, available from SmartLink International, is system designed to detect and supervise wandering dementia patients. When a patient wanders from a pre-programmed designated area, SmartWalk immediately notifies the nurse or carer.
The system works by the attachment of a small radio transmitter to the wrist of the patient. Door station resonators are installed near any door leading to unsafe areas and if a patient wearing the wrist transmitter wanders near or through the door, the door station beeps and flashes the alarm light. The system can be configured to either instantly contact the nurse station or lock the relevant door when the monitored patient approaches, but allows unmonitored persons through.
